For over a century the Senior Cups in all four provinces were the major competitions in domestic Irish rugby. Held in March / April each year, they brought down the curtain on the senior club season. During their history, the competitions closed down in each province for five seasons ( 1915 1919 ) during the Great War and in Ulster for six seasons ( 1940 1945 ) during World War Two. The arrival on the scene of the All-Ireland League in 1990 / 91 has however caused interest in the Senior Cups to be diluted in recent times. These days the competitions in all but Ulster are played off in the autumn and the initial rounds are scheduled to dove tail with the commencement of the AIB League in mid-October.
