PROVINCIAL SENIOR CUP COMPETITIONS 30th January 2007
By Des Daly

For over a century the Senior Cups in all four provinces were the major competitions in domestic Irish rugby. Held in March / April each year, they brought down the curtain on the senior club season. During their history, the competitions closed down in each province for five seasons ( 1915 – 1919 ) during the Great War and in Ulster for six seasons ( 1940 – 1945 ) during World War Two. The arrival on the scene of the All-Ireland League in 1990 / 91 has however caused interest in the Senior Cups to be diluted in recent times. These days the competitions in all but Ulster are played off in the autumn and the initial rounds are scheduled to dove tail with the commencement of the AIB League in mid-October. Below is a summary of the Senior Cup winners in all four provinces.

Neil was delighted with the award and he commented that a great buzz was created in the college when it was suggested that a scholarship was available from Barnhall. Commenting at the presentation club president Liam Coleman said “we are very pleased to support the efforts of Paul Davis in developing sport in the College and supporting the development of Rugby in NUI Maynooth is a priority for our club. Director of Rugby Eddie Fitzgerald said this was a milestone for Barnhall. We have always had a strong focus on mini and youth rugby and this has proven to be a very successful strategy for the Club. Closer links with NUI Maynooth is a further step in developing the Rugby talent on our doorstep.
Rugby Development Officer for Barnhall John Bagnall said the development of NUI Maynooth over the past ten to fifteen years has been extensive with both the academic program and the physical structure and facilities in the college expanding significantly. With this expansion we are seeing a broad range of athletes coming to Maynooth and rugby is well represented as a sport played by the students. We have focussed our efforts in developing the game within the college as well as looking to develop the skills and talent of students that have played in clubs around the country. We ant to provide the opportunity to Maynooth Students to play both social rugby and Rugby at the top level and the development of a scholarship program copper fastens this approach. Said Baganll
