Band of Brothers back in France
By Noel Dillion 15th of November 2006

Last season Barnhall RFC made a small bit of history for the club and possibly for any team in Rugby in Ireland . In a friendly encounter with the Toulouse under 23 academy Barnhall fielded no fewer then four sets of brothers. We are aware of the feet achieved by Clonakilty RFC where they have seven sets of brothers in the club at the same time but they have never had more then three sets of brother's play in any one game. Other clubs may be able to top this statistic. It would be really interesting to see if a team ever took the field in a rugby match with more sets of brothers or with a very large no of brothers from a single family.
The brothers in question that performed in the French adventure, which for the record Barnhall won, included, Eoin and Paul Burke, Earl and Ronnie Brennan (brother of Trevor Brennan) Jack and Joe Looby, (Sons of Barnhall President of the time) and the Dunne's Barry and Cormack who could be described as the baby brothers in this particular grouping.
Barnhall has had a significant if not long history of large families involved in playing with the club. In total six of the Burke children have played competitively for the club with the five boys Conrad, Declan, Eoin, Paul and Brendan (now playing with Rotherham in the UK league) and Fiona who played for the Ladies team. We have had three Families with three sets of brothers playing, the O'Connor's, the Cullen's and the Pardy's
The Brennan Family already mentioned above had four sons who played in the club and Rory the proud Father of the now famous rugby family participated vigorously in the Golden oldies being a late convert to the egg shaped ball. We did have a Father and son combinations performing in senior matches. Pat “Ginger” Connolly a founding father of Barnhall and his son Barry played in a number of friendly matches and Seamus a Hoare and his son Derek played in competitive league matches for the second team. Seamus was a Gaelic football hero for Donegal for a number of years when he joined the boys in Blue in Barnhall. Seamus played several sports to an exceptional standard and in his later years togged out at full back. His son Derek who stood six foot five played on the wing. Back then the winger and not the no 2 had the task of throwing in the ball but in Derek's case on our line out Derek stood anywhere in the line and we threw the ball to him.
I have not covered the long list of brothers in the youths or mini ranks. With luck they will become the Brennan's and Burkes of the future. We could also do with a few Looby, Cullen and Smyth boys as the committee effort needs support as well. All in all rugby in Barnhall is a Family Affair.

Bren the Titan 13th of November 2006

Titans centre Brendan Burke continues to excel at the Earth Arena since joining from Leinster in the summer.
Burke, 25, played alongside the likes of Brian O'Driscoll, Shane Horgan and Felipe Contempomi in Dublin, appearing in all but one of Leinster's six Heineken Cup matches three seasons ago and earning a call-up to an Ireland training squad before succumbing to a serious groin injury.
These days, the company he keeps on the rugby field is slightly less august, but Burke is perfectly content. He is happy to be playing after spending most of his time at Leinster on the bench – his three Heineken Cup starts came when O'Driscoll and Denis Hickie were injured.
"There were not many vacancies," he said.
"They even had internationals on the bench. It was very hard to get a game."
The Earth Titans certainly appreciate him. Asked what the versatile player's best position is, coach Andre Bester was unequivocal.
"Anything from 9 to 15," he said.
"He's a very special player. He's like O'Driscoll in defence. He doesn't miss tackles and he's so quick onto the ball to make turnovers, and he's got great hands.
"There's no doubt, he's a Premiership player. I know that guys in Ireland will try to get him back, but I will try twice as hard to keep him."
He may not have to try very hard. Burke, who prefers to play at full-back or outside centre, is in no rush to return home.
He does not give the impression that he is using the Titans as a stepping stone.
"I've no plans at the moment," said the qualified electrician, who is working as Rotherham's video analyst.
"We are still looking like we are going to get promoted and if we do that, there's no reason to leave. And if we don't, we could have another good season like this one and there's still no reason to leave."

Focus Turns To Test Matches 1st November 2006

After two hectic weekends of European action, Ireland's squad members are back in camp in Dublin as coach Eddie O'Sullivan prepares his men for "a different challenge."
Between Saturday and November 26 the last three rugby internationals will be played at Lansdowne Road before the Dublin 4 stadium's eagerly-awaited redevelopment.
South Africa and Australia, the two teams stationed immediately above the fifth-ranked Irish in the world rankings, and a Pacific Islands team coached by Pat Lam, will provide the opposition as O'Sullivan's men tune up for next year's RBS 6 Nations and Rugby World Cup.
The Corkman will be using these Autumn internationals to blood some new players and add some strength in depth - there are four uncapped players in the provisional 32-man squad.
After watching his players go through a non-contact session in Bray on Monday, O'Sullivan said: "It's a bit different from previous autumns when you go out saying you want to win against big guns like South Africa and Australia.
"You still would like to do that but this time around I'm keeping one eye on the World Cup and am considering a bit more depth in the squad, certainly in some positions. There are new faces and I would like to use the three games to get more people on the pitch.
"Having said that, I'm not going out with the attitude that it's an experiment - it's not. We want to win the three Test matches, but we have more elbow room. The first game (against South Africa) will tell us a lot about how we are and hopefully we'll have more room for manoeuvring over the course of the three games.
"I don't want to go down that road, of sacrificing results. We want to win games and I don't want to base team selection on whether it doesn't matter if we win a game," he added.
O'Sullivan was a busy man during the past fortnight, travelling around the country and abroad to check on his players' movements in the Heineken Cup. Quietly satisfied about the provinces' form, he insisted: "All three Irish teams are well in contention for Heineken Cup honours. It was disappointing, of course, for Ulster and Leinster to lose at the weekend, but it's not a disaster (for them).
"Now we've to focus the guys on a different challenge over the next few weeks, and they won't need any reminding of that. The important thing is that we have no really serious injury problems as we face into this three-match series."
Both Brian O'Driscoll and Paul O'Connell sat out last year's Autumn internationals due to injury and having the key duo back for the 2006 series has added further confidence to an Irish squad already thriving on the rude health of the provinces.
The swings and roundabouts nature of rugby means that could all change soon, but the pre-season conditioning work that O'Driscoll and company got through has provided them with the ideal platform to prosper in this long stretch before next September's World Cup kick-off.
Reflecting on the IRFU's pre-season conditioning programme, O'Sullivan said: "I think we have a pretty good system in place that tries to make sure that players are given the opportunity to hit the ground running at the start of every season.
"The way our system works sometimes puts the provinces under pressure, and that's not always perfect from their point of view, but I think it's good for the players and therefore, good for the teams.
"New Zealand recently adopted a system to ensure that the bulk of their top players would be properly man-managed in advance of the World Cup - I think recognition was given to the way we operate here.
"Some countries either don't or just cannot do the same. We're more in control of our own destiny. After that, you have to rely on a bit of good fortune."
